What's in a name? Everything


Please look at the picture above. No, this is not a joke, but it is a drill. What’s wrong with this picture? Do you think that there’s anything wrong with the picture? If you don’t see anything wrong with the picture, I do, it’s the name of the actual company. After riding past this construction site and laughing to the point of tears, I felt inspired to share this with you all. If someone asked you what company do you work for, how would you tell them that you work for “Hoar Management Group”? There’s no way of saying this with a serious face and not have the person on the other end laugh at you. Therefore, thanks to this company’s blunder the subject of this week’s blog, “What’s in a name? Everything!”

Many people believe that creating a “name” for their theme, event, or otherwise, is a simple process and does not hold any weight. However, contrary to popular belief, when planning an event, theme, business or otherwise, you need to think hard about your name and then work backwards from there. What is the lasting impression would you want to leave for your guests? If they wanted to describe your event, what three adjectives would they use? Remember, you only get one chance to make a lasting impression and promoting your event with the right key is essential.

If at all possible, try to close your eyes and imagine your event then write down the words that describe your activity. If you’re creative, draw a sketch of your event and try to determine a name that would fit the drawing you just completed. Do what you can to create a name and a theme that fits the personality of the location, the host (or business), and what people may want to get out it. Remember that it should be easy to remember, easy to understand, and can transcend the thought patterns of your oldest to the youngest guest. For example, if you want to create a theme which is “timeless”- then you wouldn’t decorate or create a scene that is based on current trends. You would actually create an atmosphere that is classical with clean lines and streamlined furniture that leave your guests wanting more.

So what’s in a name? I would say everything, so much so, that your name begins the path to create your brand, your journey, your life. Next time you just “come up” with a name for a business, event, or otherwise, remember the picture above, do you want people to laugh your name or actually “get it”. I must be about my business

It’s been on my mind for awhile the fact that I have not maintained my blog site like I should have. Since my last official blog entry in January- a lot of things have been occurring via business and otherwise (personal, sorority life, etc.). I have a new pet, have some serious inventory to move with another business venture (http://www.obamart.net/) and lost the files that had the potential blog topics and entries I had for this site (sigh).

However, I must remember one of my favorite quotes that I wrote a very long time ago: I must be about my business. This statement is no where near grammatically correct, but it does make a lot of sense. We must always be about our business. How can we make our business grow, how can we expand, how can we achieve our goals, how can we make the best decisions for our business? Entrepreneurs should ask themselves these questions at least on a weekly basis. To be most effective, I would say that you really should ask these questions everyday. I know that you may be thinking “I don’t have time to ask myself those questions”, but I say a perfect time would be either when you first wake up or when you get ready to retire for the evening. Keeping these questions in mind helps you remind yourself the purpose of being in business and what you can do to take it to the next level.
